i heard he was a national hero but i don't know much about him.

Jose Rizal is a National Hero, a doctor, writer,poet ,teacher ,etc
by that, I meant, after his death. Sure enough there were no americans during his time and that he belonged to a principalia class and that he, along with the likes of marcelo del pilar and other propagandists, was the first to finish education during Spanish decree.
Back in late 1900's there was a deliberation whether or not there should be a national hero. Obviously, there were two assemblies formed- the philippine assembly which is somewhat like the house of rep and the philippine commission composed of pro-americans and other elite american officers. The result- cast a vote among the nominated filipino heroes..and with a simple twist and drive, we have Jose Rizal as our national hero. I'd suggest that you browse gregorio zaide's notes and among other historians.

Hey rhitzky. I've just only read your post. I could recommend some books that discuss about jose's being sponsored by the americans. Zaide alone has a narrative about it and even renato constantino's past revisited. The thing is, during the american regime, i.e. when the Philippine assembly and constabulary were established- there were moves on who should become the national hero. They made some investigation and apparently there were more than five names (heroes) that appeared on the list. Only Rizal's life history was proved to be more moving (and dramatic as others would say).. and voila 
You might as well check out Rizal's view on assimilation (that would also add some weight with regards to the above mentioned question.

As what I have learned on my study, Rizal is a genius, and talented man. He has a lot of contribution in the his fatherland in order for him to redeemed his oppressed people from the Spanish tyranny. He is a brilliant person and has a word of honor. But I could say that even he is brilliant sometimes I could say that he is a closed minded person, because he doesn't even listen the heed of his friends, still he pursue on what on his mind even it would brought him death. I admire the motto of Rizal, where in he says that "it is better to die by doing something for our Fatherland".
Rizal is a prophet one, because on his satirical writings especially his response which is the Por Telefono of Father Salvador Font on the attack of his Noli Me Tangere, his prophecy that the Philippines would enjoy for the first time in communicating somebody abroad by the used of Telephone. Definitely he says that I would happen this on 1900, but Telephone was invented and introduced in 1901...
I have a doubt also regarding the travel of Rizal in America, where in during that time he boarded a train to reach New York, from Rhino Nivada on May 7, 1888, and he reached New York in almost one week on May 13, 188. It is impossible to do it during that time. Isn't impossible right? But I don't think so if it is true. Where in fact it is written in the History.......

On the otherhand, most history books would describe Jose Rizal in a god like manner- incapable of committing mistakes-- thus some {my students in particular} come in awe with Rizals achievements. :s
