C but I understand it is not quite the same as in Portugal.
malemaranello | 11 January 2006 - 3:38pm
Portuguese is the official language of Brazil.
femalesamanthinha | 11 January 2006 - 7:01pm
C, but brazilian variety of Portuguese. It's different from European Portuguese (which is spoken in Portugal). They are different in pronunciation and grammar.
malemaranello | 12 January 2006 - 11:10am
@ radager: Yes, I am positive. Portuguese IS the official language of Brazil, but obviously it varies slightly differently from mainland Portugal.
malegaravello | 12 January 2006 - 2:44pm
I confirm it. We here speak Portuguese.

But as it was stated, our Portuguese differs in many words from the Portuguese spoken in Portugal.

@radager = by your logic, US should speak United Statian or American!

Οι

Achei esse tópico no fundo do baú e resolvi dar a minha contribuição.

We speak Portuguese in Brazil. Definitely "C": Portuguese.

But as someone said, we have a Brazilian Portuguese, that to say the least, has very little to do with nowadays Portuguese from Portugal. Thousands of different words and usages, structures, phrase patterns, not to mention pronounciation. So my second bet would be "A": Brazilian.

In Brazil, also, as someone cleverly pointed out, there are huge immigrant communities called "colonies" in southern Brazil where many don´t know or simply don´t care about Portuguese. E.g. german colonies, italian, ucranian, japanese, etc. (Was there a "none of the above" option?)

Also, as in any other country, at the borders, many people speak the languages of our neighbours. Spanish, as well as other native american (indian as we say) languages, like guarani, to cite one example. Here I have to add letters "B" and "D"! Wink

Apart from the above, within Brazil we do have several ways of speaking which, if not different enough to hinder communication, they are different enough to be regarded as dialects.

lack of options... Smile

No, Brazilian dont speak Spanish...
Brazilian speak Portuguese for sure, what some people call "Brazilian Portuguese" since it has some (or lots) of differences between the Portuguese from Portugal and the Portuguese spoken in Brazil.
But that happens, the same way that American English is different from British English and so on...
