I have no doubt in my mind that Denmark these days is one of the most xenophobic countries in western Europe. If you put the word xenophobia on google you'll find over than 5 millions results associated with Denmark !! Shocked 10 in the world !
For more information I invite all people to have a look at this blog, Some Danish historian is trying to explain the historical reasons for xenophoboia Smile :
Before studying native Americans you should know that first dear morningstar Smile

I have at home a book : Copenhagen tourist guide (Berlitz edition) adn it seems to be Very interesting place,
I think Denmark is a beautiful country Love but infortunately Sad most of the peolpe there are...well unwelcoming and xenophobian...

I've been there two years ago, in the summer, and I can say that it's a wonderful, little country with great people. If I had to say what I liked the most, that would probably be Skagen or Ribe, simply two great places.

Now you are generalising Skypiercer... I am not xenophobic - I welcome everyone as long as they behave! How can you say that most people here are unwelcoming and xenophobian? Have you visited Denmark yourself?

maleSkyPiercer | 17 April 2007 - 9:08pm

That's what I've read in newspapers...
I think it's the government who is like that Smile The radical or extreme right is powerful that's the reason I guess.
Well about people, the two I met here are cool ! (Arym and you)

Well I have to admit that I've exaggerated Razz "overdrivelse fremmer forståelsen" Smile

As I told to someone here I don't blame the xenophobian danes, some foreigners are showing a lot of disrespect...I think people who want living in an other country should me more interested in the culture of the hosting country, and learning the Danish language (in our case) is the least they can do...I knew that it's not the case most of time Sad
You have to take out those kind of people from your country. They aren't useful and they could make a lot of trouble in the future...
Have you heard about the riots in France ? They almost burned Paris !! Shocked

Infortunately Danish caricatures crisis made the misunderstood beetween communities bigger than ever, especially because of some medias interventions.

Well - if only we could take out those kind of people you are talking about. But it's not that easy. I live in an area that's close to a ghetto - but it's also close to a nice neighbourhood. I live in a dorm - and in every vacation we have problems with break-ins. We often see young foreigners (turks, arabs) walking around here and they have no business being at this dorm - but then we all know what they are up to. Last year they were so shameless that they were walking around here - looking into peoples windows - knocking on the door asking if "is Muhammad home" (to find out if people were home). I mean - how stupid do they think we are?? I hate types like these!! And where are the parents? These kids are from the age of 12 and up! Some of these kids really take advantage that they can't be punished for their crimers because they are not 15 or over.

maleSkyPiercer | 19 April 2007 - 1:47pm

I can imagine how hard it is...Some of them like the kids you're talking about have legal papers and Danish nationality, maybe they was born here. I think you have to expect more of unqualified immigrants to come as long as the governement is giving such a big social advantages ! A couple with 2 kids get 2500 € by month !! Shocked What? For the comparaison the salary of our prime minister can't reach 2000 € !! I think it explains why more than the half of the 300.000 immigrants living in Denmark aren't working... Sad
I heard that some Palestinians used this money to help terrorist organisations like HAMAS and Hezbollah...
about the kids it's surely the fault of their parents...
Just one thing if really "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" as used to say Shakespeare Wink
I think it's the Dansk Folkeparti and Pia Kjaersgaard...

Yes - Dansk Folkeparti isn't good for Denmark nor is Pia Kjærsgård. I really don't like her. But I think you are right in the other things as well.

I've never been to Denmark but I imagine it a very nice place to visit with nice architecture, I don't know why but it seems peaceful.

maleCesar | 16 May 2007 - 8:07pm

Way back in 1978, I had the chance to spend three weeks in Denmark. A Danish friend got me a job with her uncle picking up strawberries during the season in his farm in the island of Fyn, just a few kilometers away from Odense. Unfortunately, it was raining almost all the time and I had no other choice but to move to Paris where there were another friends waiting for me.
It has been such a loooooooong time since that, that for a moment it looks as if it have happened in another incarnation! Yet, everything remains crystal clear in my mind.

I remember the train trip between Copenhagen and Odense. The first stop was in a place called Roskilde and then we had to take a ferry between Korsor and Nyborg. I also remember a short trip I made to a small town called Assens. I was also unable to forget how friendly and polite most Danish were, to the extent that I was asking myself all the time if I was living a fairy tale or if it was the plain truth laying there in front of my eyes.
I will tell you just a couple of stories as examples of what went on during my staying in Denmark.

While being on a small party in a small village near Odense, I met a couple (a man and a woman) who were living together and we spoke all the time about Argentina, Denmark, my trip throughout Europe, and many other things. When the party was over they invited me to stay at their home. I still remember the address if you can believe that!!!!! “Tietgensvaenget 2, Odense”. I went there and spent three days. Can you believe they gave me the key of their house in order to be able to come and go in case they were working? I was a person whom they had met only a few hours ago!!!!

And here goes the second story. While being in Copenhagen, I was standing in a wide avenue in downtown looking at a map, trying to find out where was located a museum I was looking for. I believe the name of the avenue was “Vesterbrogade” or something close to that. A man who happened to be driving in that important avenue pulled out his car to where I was standing with the map and asked me what I was looking for. When I told him, he gave me the proper directions and then, after wishing me a nice staying in Denmark, he continued his way!!! You don’t get to see that too often in this world!

There are other stories to tell, apparently meaningless, but that left a big impact in my mind.
When leaving the country, I was completely penniless since the idea of getting some money during the strawberry harvest had failed. I entered one time into a small shop in Copenhagen to get some supplies to eat at least some sandwiches. I picked up some bread, some cheese, and some mayonnaise. When going to pay, I was short a few cents, so I left the mayonnaise apart. The guy saw me with my backpack, without shaving, with my long hair... and asked me: “Are you touring the country and run out of money?” I was surprised and answered: “Yes, I have a train ticket to Paris in my pocket and ten American dollars”. Then the guy politely told me: “Get the mayonnaise and make yourself some nice sandwiches. The difference is on the house”.
That guy probably will never have an idea about what he did for his country since for the last thirty years I have done nothing but to refer to Denmark as the finest country I have ever been into. What’s more, if I had to choose a place where to spend the rest of my life... Odense is by far the one!

That happened when I was 21 years old. I always thought that I would be able to return to Denmark with more money, just to travel the country. I am 50 years old now and I certainly know that chances are that I will never make it. But one can never stop dreaming, can we?

I know it is unusual to post such a long writing in a forum, but I simply saw the opportunity to ventilate the memories I still keep from those wonderful and unforgettable 21 days.

femalemorningstar | 18 May 2007 - 6:04pm

Hey Cesar,
Thank you for sharing your memories of your trip Smile Those are nice memories. I don't know if it would be the same today, but I can imagine it was like that in the old days. We hadn't so much trouble back then. 50 years is no age yet, and I hope you get the chance to visit Denmark again Smile

In denmark the houses are made of Lego and people live entirely on beer and red, boiled sausages.

Lol - you are almost right... except for the houses made of lego. We do have a park called Legoland though :-p hehe

femalearym | 26 May 2007 - 8:21am

Well even if we prefer to claim that the building blocks of houses are actually bricks rather than Lego, they are still pretty much built according to the Lego principle.

Denmark is cool, the people are friendly and open hearted. They typical nordisc human, sometimes a little bit shy, sometimes a little bit slow. But they are groundstanding people, which are pround of their country.
Copenhagen , the capitol town is clean and expensive, but sooo beautiful. Special the Tivoli-Park - great. So all things you need for life are expensive in Denmark ( also see Sweden, Finnland and Norway) Alcohol is very expensiv, also tabac.
The nature is great. Two coast, northsea-side with sandy beach and eastsea-side with a lot of stony beaches. Many little, fine towns with habours and holiday-camps with typical dansk houses near the beach. I can`t believe it, but can drive with your car on to the beach. Great.
Best time for holiday is June-October. Till then, nothing goes, because autum-storms begin to blow, very hard, sometimes.
Denmark is good for cycling, fishing, swimmin, camping, walking, coach-potatoes, visiting towns and many islands by ship. By ship you can go to sweden, finnland and norway. The cheapest/nearest way by ship goes to sweden. From Skagen or Hirtshals you arrived in Sweden in 3 hours. Great.
Very special in Denmark are the holiday-cottages with swimmingpool and sauna. For holiday - rent a must.
I can tell you much more, but before you fell in sleep, I stop now...somstimes I think, I seddle down there.

femaleMika200 | 21 April 2008 - 9:40am

Denmark is a wonderful country, with very kind people. The most beautiful place in Denmark is the west coast. I really could advise to visit this country.

femaleLesewurm | 4 May 2008 - 12:17pm

I lived in Denmark for 3 years. While Danish citizens are allowed to buy a house an nearly every EU member state foreigners are forbidden to buy a house in Denmark.

Went to Bornholm a few days back, and it was just awesome. I find the people extremely tolerant and peaceful. They as if fear screaming or shouting and live with an extremely positive attitude. Other than that I was delighted with the amazing weather and nature, all green and so pristine. No wonder they have a Medittereanian climate there ... And their post office works quick too, all the cards I sent back home or to friends overseas reached them far earlier than I expected Smile
