Modern Greek, ancient Greek or both and independently of skill levels...

I know there are maybe a (very) few, but from curiosity,
what was your motivation to attempt it ?

i started out of curiosity. the name was funny: γρεεκ. caught my attention. i couldnt help it.

a friend from school showed it to me once, told me to try a bit, wow, i felt different right away. what a trip... Smile

over the years i became more and more addicted to it, and now i am completely dependant on γρεεκ. i have to use ιτ everyday, otherwise my day doesnt start at all...i fell depressed and cant even get out of bed. life is tasteless without my δαιλυ dose of γρεεκ.

γρεεκ is awesome. the modern version of it, i mean. the older version would definitely be too deep of a dive into the realms of γρεεκ. i dont think i would had survived at all...

έλα! έλα μέσα μαζί μας, φίλε. το Θα σου αρέσει...

@ bella stella

unfortunately i don't think that there are any sites learning the Greek language. and if there are any i don't think that they d help.... if u have any friends from greece in the uk tell them to teach you the basic communication. but even if you dont do this dont worry. people in greece speak english (most of them) and u ll learn greek in no time just by hearing them. anyway i wish you all the luck either it is in rhodes or in crete. personally i prefer crete!

@ bella stella

you could try the link suggested by our friend danihl in a previous topic here. I personally haven't tested it, but it's free and maybe a decent solution for starters

@bella
Kiri, I've tried to learn Greek by myself but it's too difficult (oh well, probably I'm too lazy Razz ) I'm joining a language group in Hellenic cultural center in 2 weeks Happy jumping Guess you should find something like that in your town.
Anyway, you could try this:

thanks for the replies, i will try the links when i get back from uni today Smile

i know greeks speak english but i dont want to be ignorant and i love learning languages too even if it is as hard as greek. I think the hardest part will be the alphabet to be honest!

i am going to crete soon and i have just come back from rhodes so i will see which one i prefer Smile i love the greeks, they are great people.

It's a pleasure to realize that some people wish to learn this specific language-namely greek
It can be hard for anyone....that's why many greeks already speak/write/spell it inadequately

Alphabet is not the main difficulty. Grammar and syntax is, but also the immense vocabulary and the
multiple meanings in many words, idioms, expressions etc.

Do not expect to find any similarities with any other languages (like anglo-saxon or latin originated ones), except the so many greek linguistic roots that have influenced them (as an example, medicine's
terminology or even philosophy's is based and structured in ancient greek language forms and notions).

Still, this learning effort is a merit for those who attempt it Very happy

malekonstantinos | 14 September 2007 - 7:41pm

Oh, I forgot

@ bella stella
If you go to Crete, well, sometimes the dialect(s) there (it also depends on the regions) are directly influenced by ancient greek, so you may encounter some "'funky" linguistic situations (I have my roots
in Crete, so I can tell) , but that's not scary, we Cretans are able to speak 'normalised' greek Very happy
Have a nice staying in Crete Smile

femalebella_stella_46 | 17 September 2007 - 6:14pm

i went to the library today and got some books and tapes to help me. I am teaching myself the alphabet too. I can write and say the first 12 letters upper and lower case and im already confused Laughing There is a 'society' (club) in my uni called the 'greek and cypriot' society. Hopefully they will let an english person join too so they can teach me some real greek Very happy if they dont let me i will pretend by saying hello and thanks (which are the only words i know)

thanks for your help, i will be back soon speaking fluent greek Smile

I know a little of Modern Greek and can pronounce it either archaically or normally. I am trying to find a real Greek person to help me, but I come from nowhere and have had to resort to the internet.

malekonstantinos | 4 October 2007 - 11:45pm

@ sheidhaf
I bet i understand what you mean by archaically pronouncing modern greek.
That's not the better way to cope with it....modern greek is simply modern greek...of course it's got it's roots from the ancient language through the ages...
My advice is not to mix up ancient and modern greek for the moment...but only insist on its "modern"
version...if you have a good notion of the aforementioned "modern" greek, then you may have also
the bonus to get the inner meanings of the ancient greek....and beleive me, that's more than rewarding,
concerning the immense status (socio-linguistically speaking) of the given language.

understood.thanks.
