Which parts of History did you study?

EdIsHere | 15 Jul 2007 - 3:49am

I studied The Industrial Revolution, The Romans, Causes of First World War, Victorian Britain, English Civil War, French Revolution, The Nazis, Prohibition, League of Nations, The Liberal Party, Womens Suffrage.

At the moment I'm having to learn about French Revolution (again) and Liberal Government and its decline.

Have to say The Industrial Revolution was the most boring of all the subjects! Anyone else agree?

Why is it you always seem to get taught the boring parts of history? We were never really taught about WW2, infact I doubt many people in my class know there was a war in the Far East and Africa!

maleVampyre | 16 July 2007 - 11:22am

At uni: Aritish history and American history since 1700, German history from Bismarck onwards. Out of personal interest: Vikings, early British, Vietnam. And if I have time I'll try and work on all those Asian/Eastern European nomad peoples.

As for the Industrial Revolution I have to disagree. I always found it fascinating, how such a sudden quantum leap could happen (industrial espionage, for one reason Very happy ). What always bored me to death was the French and all the following revolutions.

in school we started with the Neanderthals and ended with the re-union of germany (so we did almost everything interesting happening in europe)

in university I took some courses about greek and roman architecture and therefore we had to learn a lot about these times not only their architecture, because this is only a mirror of the environment and society.

Haha the industrial revolution is pretty boring but there were some interesting things that went along with it. I am currently a history major but i really like to learn about european and russian history. My favorite time period is probably around the 16th century. In school we learned about Native Americans, Colonization of the Americas and Africa, Religion changes in Europe and the various revolutions: American, French, Russian. We also learned a lot about Cromwell and the different changes in England. Some very interesting stuff though.

General parts of world and Dutch history. I can't remember that much anymore, because back then I found history really boring (and for some parts it still is).
And yes, the industrial revolution ins still boring.

I actually study Slavic philology and Eastern European region studies, so I have quite some history courses in my program. I also chose a minor that allows me to choose courses from the department of history, because I'm really interested in it. Not planning on becoming a real historian though. Razz

I'm currently in the midst of my GCSE History course. This course revolves around Modern World history, and involves Hitlers Rise To Power, The Rise Of Communist Russia, Britain during the war (coursework), Jack the Ripper (Coursework) and Super Power Relations; The Cold War.
I'm hoping to go on to do Ancient world history in college at AS level, and hopefully onto the A2 level afterwards.

maleshaka | 22 February 2008 - 10:56pm

During the past 14 years, pretty much all of it. Italian schools are mostly antiquate and boring, but I have to say they teach history pretty well here.

The history of the past few thousand years is nothing but a bunch of lies made up by people with little to do and lots of time to do it in. When we have people today denying events that happened only a few dozen years ago (i.e. the extermination of Jews) then how could we expect anything told about history to be accurate......or credible. History, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

malesaras kumar nayak | 11 March 2008 - 7:09pm

I don't think that the industrial revolution was the most boring. For example due to industrial revolution,Germany stands a great economical status that created a effect for I & II world war.
Only Industrial Revolution was the main cause for I & II world war.

I actually take back what I said. The more I have learnt about it the more appealing it has become. and the idea of a small island being the most industrialised nation in the world is something to be proud of. But I am thankful I don't have to learn all those dates for my exams. Very happy
