I do see your point Eugenio1984. The question is though how many people from the Ukraine are actually here on Mailfriends but more importantly how many are active in the channels? Is there enough to justify the creation of a new channel?

Thumb up
You may want to look round the country channels, even with the most number of users on here, some country channels are just near dead, they are just like drought and occasionally has little rain here and there.

it's pity ho hear it from MF's team that they'll look
what they can do. Here is Russia Channel , ok I agree
with that , but Ukraine and Russia are different countries,
and I don't think anyone from Ukraine very interest in discussions
about Russia, Russian life . We have own life , own president, other
language ,culture etc. And when I want to discuss a topic about Ukraine
I always have to go on other site or forum ,as example...

I don't know what anyone else thinks..but wouldn't it be simpler to eliminate the specific country channels and create regional channels...like North America, South and Central America, EU, Middle East, Far East, Australia/NZ...something along those lines? It would require less moderators....but generate more traffic to each channel. Really...most country channels are dead...even if some friction were generated out of let's say the Middle East channel...it would still be better than having a couple of dead channels just for the sake of having one.

That sounds like a fair solution for the long term. It can work. New topics will always be created in a regional channel because there will be more countries to have discussions about. It works with the General channels, combining 2-3 similar subjects into one channel, so it should naturally work for countries/regions too.

maledustybunny | 20 July 2007 - 1:14pm

There is already a topic about country channels vs region channels... it seems nobody liked my esperanto suggestion. Laughing

I don't like the idea of just having regional channels. Countries are more or less defined whereas regions are not. Take Europe as an example, it is broken up into a countless number of informal regions... heck people can't even decide what is and isn't in Europe. Same with North America, South America... Oceania (or is it Australasia... or does it not even exist). You would end up with a never ending series or arguments from people demanding their country be in this region and taken out of that region.... and even worse... people demanding their country be broken up into different regions.

Country channels should not be treated any different to general channels... if it's popular enough it lives... if it's unpopular and doesn't have the support it kicks the bucket. But just because a country isn't there shouldn't mean people can't make topics about it. The easiest solution is to have a general country channel... after all we have a general general channel.

male†αmα_dαvε | 20 July 2007 - 1:31pm

I think that was the alternative...I'd been asking about removing some of the dead country channels for a while....people aren't interested in a country channel if it exists only when they want a new one. For all the people here from the US we have about maybe 10 active posters to the channel...that's a pretty poor percentage...but a clear indication of the real amount of active participants percentage-wise here overall. Because even the most active of channels...it's the same people keeping it active. I had been a proponent of getting rid of the country channels period...as they no longer get the level activity to keep them going...but...I don't see that happening...so I suggested the regional as an alternative.

Yeah well defining borders is always a tricky thing to do Laughing. Mostly leaves lots of casualties Laughing. But aren't there some kind of internationally accepted geographical standards you can use and refer to that whenever someone contests it :S?

Laughing Remember the controversy here a while back about one such so-called definitive list of countries that John used when making all the country channels, and the discrepancies it contained compared to a number of other so-called definitive lists?

There is no single internationally accepted convention regarding countries/regions and whatnot, just several dozen different organisations each claiming to have one.

maledresstoimpress | 22 July 2007 - 7:03am

Ugh, not even purely geographically? Completely seperate from political or religeous borders? :S

If there are enough Ukrainian people who would contribute to the channel, i'd be all for it.

So, where is ukrainian channel ? unluckies ...

malevesuviano | 11 April 2008 - 11:51pm

I am in favour too of Ukraine channel. There are few ukrainians on the site? That is true for many nationalities that have their channel. Region channel? There can be problems between countries of the same region...
