Any Advice for Travelling in Estonia?
Hello people =)
Well, I'm going to estonia in about 3 weeks... I'm going to be riding my bike around everywhere, but as I've never been to Estonia before, Or even Europe, I don't reallly know what to expect.. And Also I'm travelling alone.. So.. I was hoping maybe some of you might be able to give me some advice... Especially if there are any customs or.... things
where I might accidently come across as rude or something... cause that would be bad I think..
well Any advice would be much appreciated .. and thanks in advance ![]()

I think that Estonians are living like another place in Europe or a western country !
(Thank you globalization !
)
Hmm...You're looking a bit anxious, Don't worry Estonians don't bite ! ![]()
An advice ? Let me guess : If you cross a political subject with an Etsonian don't hesitate to make a fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin and Russians in general ![]()

Ahah.. Yes.. well, I already know how Most Estonians feel about him... ;D
But thanks... and yeah.. well Globalisation and all yep.. but just incase I'd missed soemthing, being on the other side of the world....
Well, I suggest not to touch the politics subject at all.
Tallinn is the capital yes, loads of things to do. But Tartu is the place to visit as well! I myself live in Viljandi, which is a very nice place to live, but for a tourist, it can be a bit boring. BUT if you're a nature man, you should visit Viljandi as well, since near here, we have a great swamp land, which is breath taking beautiful and castle ruins and such.

Ahh yes...well I think last thing I wanna do is stir people up... and Yeah, I'm a nature guy.. I'm not really interested in alot of those"tourist" places... I like the more secluded places and.. yeah
see what the country is really like...
But I'm Most interested in the Nature ![]()
Thanks alot for the advice
Just been there, in Tallinn only, and then hitch hiking through. Tallinn is over-touristic, but still great. open minded people, if they are not Russian, then they speak great English, which makes life easy, cause my Estonian isn't all too well. As some estonians told me: relax!
Take your shoes off when going into a house.

Ahh yeah.. I'll TRY to relax
and Be sure to remember to take shoes off before I go inside.... I'll have to remember that, cause here, we don't do that ![]()
your houses must be very dirty then
and how can you wear shoes all the time anyway...i guess foreign people have very stinky feet ![]()
and about nature..hmm..western estonia is the best
especially islands (saaremaa and hiiumaa)

Forutunatley that doesn't happen too often ![]()
What are the laws with bikes in Estonia..... Are they just treated like a car.... or can you ride on a footpath?
but sometimes you dont know that you have stepped into a dogshit
then you wont take your shoes off and you will make your floor very dirty
well..generally you can ride where ever you want (in smaller towns)
but when you´re in tallinn..then dont ride on footaths when there are too many people (i have never seen anyone riding on them when they are crowded) but when it´s empty..then why not
i dont think they control it so much
and i guess they are more treated like cars...blah..i dont know anything about bike laws..

Agh, Well see anyway ![]()
Have people outside Benelux never heard of cycling paths? If you don't have that, then you should ride on the street. also in Tallinn it's ok to do so. i'd say it seems quite safe in Estonia to ride a bike.

Yeah sure.. Lots from you
:D
But you can tell me when I get there ![]()
Estonia has developed. Near my summer cottage, which is about 30 min ride with bus from central city, is being built cycling path. Bigger cities do have already those, especially in parks and some roads also..
If you visit Estonia I suggest to visit Southern and Western part of Estonia, if you are a nature guy, as you said;)
Though every part of Estonia has it´s great beauty spots. I visited Saaremaa last weekend and it was awesome. Saw places and castles that i had never seen before.
Defenetly would reccomend you to go and see Taevaskoja;) But ofcourse you should plan your trip ahead, where to go, where to stay, etc.
Just curious, why Estonia?
At this time of year?
Ehm. well, I'm not booking much ahead at all, I like to feel free... Not having deadlines and all that, So... It's more of an Adventure that way too... And I'm way to lazy to book ahead anyhow.
Thanks alot for that advice, I'm going to be going all around Estonia I think.
Why Estonia? Why now?
Well. I've made a great friend who Lives in Estonia, and from that I've also Heard alot about the country.... It's less expensive than alot of other european countries it seems, It's flat... And... It's also not a huge Tourist Destinatoin Like some places... I think It'll be a bit more out of the way and quiet, which is 'what I like. It also Has alot of Nature.. Which I like, and all that.. Soo... Yes.. That's why Estonia... And why Now?
Well, It was kinda Now or Not for a long time... and I want to challenge myself, so It's not winter.. but it might be a bit cold, which will make it more interesting.... I hope that makes sense.. but.. alot of stuff that goes on in my head makes no sense at all to others ![]()
Thanks Again for the advice, I'll remember those places, and I'm hoping to go to Saaremaa... Do you know how much a ferry ticket would cost with a bike?
Hehe. Adventure trips are the greatest. Had one in Saaremaa:P Just drove and saw places:) Estonia is truly a place to come and see and love at first sight to places you go is guaranteed. Here are so so so many places that i have been to, but as many places that i have not discovered for myself.
Looked up, ferry ticket for a bike costs 15 krones.
Have fun here;)
Well it looks such a lovley place ![]()
15 krones... that's cheap ![]()
Well, its like, two and a half hours untill I have to leave for the Airport
I'm so scared ![]()
Thanks for all your advice everyone! ![]()
Byebye!
Cheap indeed compared to other prices. Well I hope you packed your rain coat, coz you´ll need it;)
Have fun, and if you return, then let us know where you went etc.
Yes, I packed my raincoat ;D
I'm in Hamburg right now, But quite worried cause my bike never turned up at the airport, I'm here till friday with relatives, then I'm off to Estonia... So I hope they'll find my bike before then or I'm stuffed.

Yesss, I will be riding All over It
I think it will be cooler (In two meanings) than trains and buss cause I can just see something, and stop, where ever, whenever, and I can camp
and, then, Since I'm taking my mountain bike, I can take all the Panniers off and Go Mountain biking, ( I guess there Isn't much mountain biking in Estonia, But there is SOME I know of
)
The other meaning is that I will Probablz freeze to death.. buut, Oh well
shit happens ![]()
err wait, No.. Plane to Estonia, then bike around Estonia ![]()
I was going to ride there, BUt I dON't have enough time:(
Oh my, I thought that you were really going to rde hundreds f kilometres to Estonia...Just for the fun of it. Though it would have been great, especially with someone;) But anyhow, biking here too if fun:P I wish my friends here had bikes..But noo..only me, at the moment..
Have fun, rain is gone and autumn time has arrived, bit of sun and wind..
