Reportedly there is a map that shows that Marco Polo reached America before Columbus did. Do you believe it's probable?

I think it cant be possible, he reached China, but America???
I know that the Vikings were the first ones who reached America in 1100 or sth...

Maps in those days weren't really the best, were they. And there's also proof that shows the Romans were in America, and before them thePhenicians. And a test showed that also the Egyptians could have reached the continent with their boats. But apparently they all ddn't have much influence on either societies so what's the point?

Well if the vikings were there first, and the romans and egyptians even are rumored to have stepped foot on American soil before Columbus, then why not Marco Polo? Anything is possible

I dont believe it but it's probable anyway.

It doesnt really matter if people went there before as their stories were lost in time. Columbus discovered America to the eyes of the European people.

As James Joyce said once: "Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honored by posterity because he was the last to discover America"

It depends on who had the better publicist......for example, nobody would know if Jesus Christ has reached America first because his PR man forgot to get him a few extra chapters in the Bible.

I read some where Columbus was responsible for helping spread STD's....

It is possible, but unlikely - he wrote a lot of his time in China and nothing about his (hypothetical) time in America?! I don't think so!

But the Vikings entered Canada long before Columbus entered San Salvador. (~1000)

If new evidence comes up, history can and must be rewritten.

Columbus...shmolumbus,america was named america because of Amerigo Vespucci....

femaleAcOrEaNa83 | 22 May 2008 - 6:12pm

And Bermuda was named after Juan de Bermudez but the Spanish were not the first people here...so that means that just coz a place is named something doesnt mean that person discovered or colonized it...means nothing more than "someone liked the name", that's all Very happy
