so with the dollar rising, why are we still paying more for books? like seriously its starting to piss me off. I've resorted to paying for books with american money just so I'm not getting screwed, granted the book store doesn't appreciate me doing that, but like why should I be getting screwed on the price of the books I buy?

and since our dollar is doing better, have you been one of those who jumps on the plane, bus or train, to go shopping in the states?

It is difficult to predict what will happen with these currencies and the world markets. Several countries are selling the U.S. Dollar and the bottom is no where in site. As I drive down the street daily I see no effect so whatever on the American people and I see that as strange. Everyone is still buying huge SUV's and McMansions, the homebuilders in my area haven't slowed down at all. One thing I have seen in the last few days is the price of oil is starting have an effect at the gas pump. I don't think it will be a good Christmas season for retailers in the U.S., not everyone is excited about buying Chinese toys painted with lead, toys that have the date rape drug in them, and prescription drugs made from saw dust.

Thank you conservative Bush/McCain Republicans for global warming, the use of food (corn ethanol) in the gas tanks of SUV's causing famine all over the world. resulting in slow death for all life on earth. Thank you for urban sprawl, the non-stop building of new homes that no one wants, and the destruction of all farmland to build the new homes with illegal labor from south of the border that you won't protect. Thank you for trying to destroy Social Security and medical care for all Americans, great bunch of guys, oh did I mention the non stop wars to support conservative republican arms and ammunition manufactures?

A good day? I suppose it is for some..... But its starting to hurt many in the logging and lumber business. The American buyers are now finding local suppliers. Its much cheaper fror them now to purchase home grown than Canadian. This has resulted in hundreds, if not thousands of layoffs in just the past month that I have seen. And I'm only talking timber..... We sell a lot to the US..... and they are the spending here in Canada is SLOWING. So... Is it a good day?? Yes... But only if you are a Canadian buyer... not if you are trying to sell

i think the logging, lumber, pulp and paper industry in general was hurting before the dollar went up, but I'm aware of the reality because it also hurts those who live off of hunting and trapping, because furs are sold based on the american dollar. but chinese mink ranches aren't helping the cause either.

As a lower middle class part time tourist, I can tell you that the decline in U.S. dollar has most certainly thrown a monkey wrench into my travel plans! I try to vacation in Montreal and/or Quebec City as often as I can, but the exchange rate is totally forbidding it this year. And as you suggested, the crude oil prices add another negative to traveling abroad. I really wanted to make it to Quebec's 400th Birthday too, but I can't afford it with the current exchange.

It affects us Americans who don't have a CEO's bank roll, and hampers international business when Francophiles such as myself can't enjoy a few Quebecois amenities. Maybe I should tame down that "expensive taste" a bit, but I can't help but be passionate about Inuit Artwork, Charlevoix workworking and good wine. I hope the US dollar comes back to some respectable value, even if it's just for a 1,400 mile pilgrimage for a vintage Vin Rouge.

Sincerely,
le Marquis de Ceas'd
