Black Prime Minister?

  female

I am reading everywhere on the net "Is the USA ready for a Black President?".

Now I wanna put this question, but in a slightly different way, to the UK.

Can you imagine us here in the UK asking the same question, if we had a good black candidate for PM?

Would there be discussions as to whether we are "ready" for a black PM?

Personally I can't see it. I dont see there being a big hoo-haa if the candidate is ideal.
But maybe I am wrong.....what do you think?

And if you agree with me, does that make us less racist than the Americans who have to question such an event taking place in history?

The answer is pretty obvious from the number of comments that were made of Louis Hamilton being the first black formula 1 racing driver

Britain is too full of red tape and political correctness for this to happen in our lifetime.

It is in favour of ethnics though. However, no I don't think we'll see a Black Prime Minister - too unpopular and not really right.

femaleserenity_1 | 27 November 2007 - 8:30pm

there would probly be some people who wanted to make an issue of it ... there always is but i wouldn't see it as a problem myself .. if the candidate is perfect for the role then so be it Smile

Shouldn't really matter if he is black or not..a campaign shouldn't be built on "first ever black prime minister" ie Barrack Obama and his "sorry i was working on coloured peoples time" quote.

malesmallvilledr | 13 January 2008 - 12:08pm

I don't see a problem, like people say, as long as the campaign isnt based on "being the first black premier". We should vote based on the best candidate, if they have our best interests at heart, then colour shouldnt come into it

Black, white, pink with yellow spot’s we will still get screwed , personally, I think our first non-white PM will come from the Asian community. Hopefully sooner than later.....

"And if you agree with me, does that make us less racist than the Americans who have to question such an event taking place in history?"

Less racist? I think there is more behind the question Americans (and others, mind you) ask than "can we deal with a president who has black skin?" It's more about "Are we ready to confront the issues we have brushed under the rug?" Having a black president means some things will have to be dealt with that were not satisfactorily addressed previously. I personally don't think they are questioning the event taking place but their own ability to work though what they will need to work through--and that comes from all "sides". There are plenty of blacks who are asking the same (or similar) questions--does that automatically make them racist?

And it should be remembered that race issues often are made into issues by the candidates themselves as well as some so-called leaders in the "black community."

It is, apparantly, acceptable to label people as "racist" simply because they notice another's race, and what is missed is that there can be reasonable discussions that have race as a prime theme--especially since it is part of the history.

Having lived on both sides of the pond (and elsewhere), I *do* see it being asked in the UK because to get to the phase where a candidate is considered ideal, the race (or religion, if it ever came to, say, a Muslim running for office) is going to be discussed if it is different from what the country historically has had, whatever the country (e.g. Sonia Gandhi-and she wasn't the first). That doesn't make the people who discuss it racist simply by discussing it. (They might be, but the mere topic doesn't make it so. It's not so simplistic.

I totally agree, but I still think it is going to be discussed wherever it occurs (and as regards sex, religion, etc.).

@ Chana, I don't understand then what is meant when America questions if it is ready for a black president! What do they mean then? What black issues are there that need to be addressed?

maleStarblind | 6 February 2008 - 11:58pm

Thatcher famously said that she didn't expect to see a female PM in her lifetime... we all know what happened there!!!
It's far from being impossible... in fact, I'm pretty confident that Britain will have a black PM before the States has a black President!

I couldn't care less about a person's skin tone as long as they're the best candidate for the job. I doubt we'll see it in this country in our lifetime though.

A better question might be...would you vote for someone solely because they were black or female or Asian..etc..?
I honestly could care less one way or another..it would neither cause me to vote for someone or against someone. Doesn't matter in the slightest.
Regardless, looks like the US could beat the UK to the punch no matter others perceptions.

There can never be a black PM in the UK Not when we are not even welcome at the moment. The ones who are here are even deported. European Union is the one that is now welcome in the UK

You are referring to African illegal immigrants?

There shouldn't be a "us and them" type of mentality.

femaleShelyra | 19 March 2008 - 10:00pm

everytime the first black, asian, muslim, jew, woman, disabled person, etc. is going to be candidate the question "are we ready" will arise. not only in the uk but everywhere. it has nothing to do with the qualities of the person, its something the press and opposition are bringing to the front because they think their campaign is going to be more easy if asking such a question.

for me the appearance of a person doesn't matter, it is his/her quality that counts.
