Argentine patriotism

An English friend of mine who lived in Buenos Aires for some years thinks Argentines are very patriotic and love their country, but I've also heard other foreigners who lived here for at least a year (also English) disagree, saying that Argentines only want to move to Europe. Of course it's not possible to generalize any statement to all Argentines; the point here is to focus on what may be true of the majority. This question is addressed both to Argentines and non-Argentines, each from their point of view, of course.

I don't think we are patriotic at all. There exist some good intentions, (some folklorists, or socialist singers like Víctor Heredia, well at least what I know about him) but I don't consider the common argentine citizen as patriotic. It's easy to hear things like "The hymn should be sung in every international soccer match" or "Let's defend our flag vs. Germany, England or Brazil in all world soccer championships". It seems that all the patriotism only "survives" during the previous moments before a soccer match, after that (specially when we lose), due to all our usual problems of corruption, injustice, violence, financial and unemployment problems, all people tend to think "This country sucks".

In my opinion, if this were a bit different, people would care more for a lot of forgotten issues.

It's so simple: "If most of the few that has a lot, would give a few of the lot that have to most of the many who have a few, everything would be different." :-)

I figured something like that Very happy That's the impression I have sometimes, about Argentines being very "patriotic" about football (soccer) games for example, but not much else. I don't really think corruption and other problems are the reason, at least not the main reason. If it were so, we would have to do a bit of research to see if other countries with similar problems are equally "unpatriotic". I think that the fact that most Argentines, being of European descent, feel "failed" Europeans and are constantly comparing their country to Europe has more to do with this lack of patriotism.
