I would prefer the effort rather than the gift. Instead of buying flowers, why not pick the flowers yourself? It sounds silly, but I'd be more impressed with personally hand-picked weeds than a beautiful bunch of flowers that were bought. The latter just doesn't require the thought and effort, it's a typical gesture, not really an expression of personal sentiment.

I would much rather a note with your thoughts and feelings written down, that I could read over and over again. I think this would be priceless.

I like receiving flowers... but I like receiving more original gifts as some of you have mentioned here. My boyfriend, instead of giving me a flower, gave a painting of a rose that he made himself. Very sweet and original. I like it that way.
