The day takes the name from one or two early-Christian martyrs named Valentinus. However, the link between the 14th of February and romantic love or relationship has no history before the time of Chaucer and of the courtly love tradition.

we are not crazy about valentines day, just what we have made of it..now with no religious connection it is a day for remembering love, especially with flowers..el al cargo usually has 2 extra jumbo jet carriers on to carry flowers to european swains for giving to their current flames...also it is an opportunity to hopefully move closer to another person with romance being the hope..in american history it was the day the people of chicago iillinois decided that they wanted capone OUT of their city...

I personally am not crazy about Valentines day.
To me it is just an opportunity to show the person you love that yu are thinking of them and that your feelings are true.

Sure you can do that on any other day of the year. but why not have a special day too? It's nice.

These days? It is just commercial fluff. I think if people made the effort and showed their affection for their lover as much as they do on Valentine's day all year round, it would be much more sincere and impacting.

Oh come on now pietro, we all know us gals deserve more appreciation for the sweet existence we have in our men's lives. What's a little bobble or cuddle to to show how much we are valued. We all know you love to see us happy. An extra day to celebrate love, with jewelry, chocolates, dinners out, how could we say no to this...lol Smile

femalefurballs | 3 February 2008 - 8:19pm

i couldn't give 2 hoots about valentines day its too commercialised and is rediculous. The only significance it has for me is that it's my nephews birthday

maledeng | 4 February 2008 - 8:53pm

According to some, 14/2 was the day Valentinus died. (he was refused to mary a heathen) But... middle of February was a special day already for Celtic women. It was one day in the year where several Celtic tribes gave wifes the freedom to leave their husband. So I guess that day, and the few days before, the Celtic husbands were extra nice, and didn't even give their wifes any beating. Christianity has the habit to place its days of celebration on pagan celebration days.

it may be a special day in USA, but here in Europe it doesn't have that character (not yet)

I think Valentine's day came from a saint called Valentine who was imprisoned or something like that...
