Sterilizing Wash/Dish Cloths
Has anyone actually tried sterilizing their flannels/wash cloths/wash up brushes/dish cloths etc by putting them in the microwave for 2mins?
It is supposed to kill 99% of all germs and bacteria.

No. I know that microwaving things can kill germs, but our dishcloths just get bleached/disinfected a couple of times, and then thrown away. Other people have to use them to clean dishes and things in our house, because i won't touch these cloths. I'm kind of a germophobe in that sense.

"He added that most cases of food poisoning occurred when people were preparing raw chicken and then used the same surface to prepare ready to eat foods such as salad."
I guess the reason this is throwninto the article is to show that most cases of poisoning don't come from bacteria (etc.) off the sponges...?
Are people still doing this? My grandmother told me when I was a small child (and I am 41!) to use seperate surfaces for meat and fruits/veggies, etc. Not that I am so much more knowing than so many others; I just thought it was common knowledge about cleaning the surface used with raw chicken and other meat, and even to keep it seperated from other surfaces used for other food items. I've seen it mentioned in magazine and newspaper articles so many kabillions of times I thought it was an ordinary piece of information.
As for the sponge thingie...I'm slighly repulsed by the idea of saving a sponge long enough to have to clean it, but I suppose if you cook a lot and sponges are expensive, it might help a wee bit to at least sometimes sterilise them. I just have a habit of throwing a packet of sponges in with the shopping every time I go to the store--it's not like I will never use them.
So far it has never been too expensive to do this, and hopefully that will never change. Oi.

It's a throwaway society, if something gets dirty - don't bother cleaning it - just throw it out and get a new one! Dishcloths one day, kids the next! ![]()
halcyon!take a look at the throwawy line of the person before you..the bit about napoleon...
well, you could recyle them, you know..not the kids, I mean.
I am a neat-freak, when I clean my kitchen (which is 4-5 times a week), I wash the walls. I have sponges & cloths for different surfaces in there. I have biodegradable washcloths. They are a bit more costly, but they're the ones I sterelize & reuse until they start falling apart then they go in the garden recycling stuff (they're made out of bamboo-you can get them at beauty/health stores). As far as sponges, I definitely pitch them, in my potting shed, that is. They're torn apart & used to fill my pots with the soil I get, in place of perlite...and yes, they soil is reused every year (after sterelizing them of pests, of course;) ). Hey, if I can save some moolah, I'm all about it. ![]()

No. I hadn't tried that. Some of those things can be ironed with a really hot iron. Would that also kill bacteria?

LOL
... nope !!
