A motive for the attack has yet to be established and gardaí are examining CCTV footage taken around the time of the shooting.

Three hours after the attack, a 23-year-old man was arrested in Dolphin's Barn in south Dublin.

The man was arrested after a violent struggle with garda patrolling the area as part of Operation Anvil.

One of the gardaí sustained a broken bone in his hand during the arrest.

Gardaí also recovered a stolen Audi car and a loaded pistol.

It is believed the shooting may be linked to feuding gangs in the Drimnagh and Crumlin areas.

The man is detained at Clondalkin Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing for information from anyone who may have any information to offer.

In particular, they are anxious to speak to a man and a young boy who were near the doorway at the time of the shooting.

this yet another current senseless act in the rise of the gun in irish society.

Unfortunately, it's not just something Irish, and not only gun related. I just read a Dutch news story that a couple of pitbulls were used for a street robbery. Sad
