Student Housing Montréal - Canada

Hi all,

I’m a 21-year old female Dutch student, who is going to study in Montréal at the L'Université du Québec à Montréal, L'École des Sciences de la Gestion (I still have to improve my French though Wink), from August – December 2008. Since no other students of my university (Maastricht University) will go study there, I am looking for housing myself. Preferably, I would like to live with students who already study at this university (and live either with their parents or in a student home), in order to help me getting acquainted during the first weeks of my stay. I study International Business in the Netherlands, and I like sports (tennis, fitness), listening to music, hanging out with friends and watching my favorite TV series (Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives etc. ), and I’m willing to pay 1000 Euros maximum per month. Anyone any recommendations / ideas where to look? If so, let me know!

Kind regards,

Eronne

First of all, congrats, you'll get to study in Montréal. We're well-known to have the best universities of Canada.

Personally, if I were you, I would not move in with someone from the UQAM, since they are...weird. LOL.

They party a lot, get drunk a lot, neo-hippies, etc. They feast a LOT. I shouldn't generalize it, but most of them are, which is not REALLY the case with students from other universities. That's the reputation of UQAM: they always go on strike, they are a bunch of drunkards, etc.

if you live with someone else, you don't even need to pay more than 300 euros per month, everything included. You just need to go to the grocery to get some food, but the rest goes in your pocket. Montréal is relatively cheap. I would compare it to Berlin.

If you have more questions, let me know.

doei en tot ziens Smile

Tu me niaises Matt. You're supposed to be helping me to find a new apartment now.

1000 Euros? That's $1450 CAN!!! You'd have to be living in the richest part of the city (that'd be Westmount) to be paying that much per month on rent!

Girl, you're throwing away your money if you find a place at that price.

There is almost no such thing as student housing at any downtown universities unfortunely.

You're better off getting an apartment or find a roommate that is looking for a roommate like you.

You could be paying about $400-$700CAN per month with roommates. You'll have a wonderful deal. I pay just $360 CAN with everythin included...the bills, the heating, etc. all in one monthy price.

Check out the Plateau...very popular with students and just 5-10 minutes from UQAM by the subway. If you're willing to be in the subway/bus for 15-20 minutes, then check out Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Rosemont districts. I've lived there all of my stay in Montreal and no bad experience whatsoever. And I still live in Maisonneuve distict.

You could find a place in downtown at $700-$900 CAN if you're not in the mood to commune for that long to save rent money. Or if you're lucky enough...you could catch a place at $500 in downtown.

Remember... Canada is cheaper than the Netherlands.

Any other questions...fire away.
