youth hostels: recommendable or not?
I like to know your opinion about hostels. Often it is a lot cheaper than hotels, but that doesn't has to mean that they are better or worse.
So please tell me where you have stayed, something positive or negative about the hostel and, if you can remember, what you have paid per night.

of course you can find many of those sites if you google "hostels", but who knows if you can trust every recommendation. even on hostelz you can find for the same hostel ratings from 1 to 5 stars in the same year. i think it's the same with normal hotel ratings. many hotels go online and rate themselves very good.
that's why i ask you for your own opinion and experience.
I like Alcatraz in Berlin, its close to Kastanienallee and theres plenty of party places close by and there's quite some cheap but good restaurants around as well, cheap area, lots fun

i stayed in hostels in ireland, germany and poland and they were brilliant! except one in dublin but it was ok. i love hostels, u get to know lots of ppl and its just nice to stay in one! but u have to be ok with strangers sleeping in ur room as well....
I always stay at youth hostels when I travel!
In London I can recommend http://www.piccadillyhotel.net/. It's a real good hostel, with a great location and a good price! The staff is very friendly and easy going, and it's clean and welcoming. It's easy getting to know the people living there too.
In Amsterdam I can recommend http://www.bulldoghotel.com/. My experience here is the same as Piccadilly. Friendly and very helpful staff! (me and my friend had a bit of problem with our roomies, because they smoked weed in the room which wasn't allowed there - and when you're trying to sleep it's not exactly a good smell.) It was a very cool place with a super location!
You have to adjust your expectations when you're living at a hostel though. It's not really anything like a hotel. You share a room with unknown people who you got to respect - not disturb them when they're sleeping and such. But really - the people you met and the impression you make is something to treasure. If you just do a little research on the hostel you're staying at, you soon find out if it's the right place for you or not. People are good at letting others know if the hostel sucked or if it was great, so you know what to expect.
It's not the same concept as a hotel. YThey are good places to meet other travellers. Usually there is less privacy.

I stayed in one in Sittard,in the South of the Netherlands when I was younger, that one was very nice.

I have stayed in a few hostels now and I don't think they are all that bad. They are actually a good solution for students, who want to travel, but don't have much money. The only thing that scares some people is that the room are usually quite big and you share them with strangers. If you travel in group though, you can ask for like 1 room for the entire group.
The prices depend on the country and the location of the hostel of course. In Helsinki (Finland) I stayed in a hostel, right outside the city center, at the site of the Olympic Stadion. There I paid something like €20-€22/night. Then in Gdansk (Poland) I was staying in a hostel, really close to the bus and the railway station. I paid 40PLN/night, which is about €10 and then in Poznan (also Poland) I slept in one 2 minutes walking from the main market square and there I paid 55PLN/night (about €15).
I hope this information was a bit useful.
