I've never been on Hawaii but people in here go there all the time and it is said to be rather expensive to live.

Also, being on a place myself where there are few roads and many places are inaccessable by road (because there isn't any), I would say to consider that if you plan to live on Hawaii. Would you be able to put up with that.

If you are considering a visit, I would say go for it. I only hear good things about it and it is also said to be like a paradise. I'd like to go someday.

But do some research..
for me the less commercialized would be the most like paradise..
you may or may not disagree..
and as @chana said..
take some deep pockets...
it ain't cheap.

Hawaii probably has the most ideal climate in the world and the islands always seem to smell of flowers. Winter and summer tempertures vary only about ten degrees Fahrenheit (ca. 6 Celsius). There is nearly a constant gentle breeze and where else in the world can you go from lush tropical rainforests to a desert within 25 miles of each other. The cost of living is very high because nearly everything is imported to the islands. The native Hawaiians don't like to work, they prefer to live on welfare.....another group who thinks they are owed something (a Hawaiian bus driver told me this). One problem that I would have is that I would get claustrophobic living in a place where I need to fly or get on a ship to go anywhere.

Hawaii is an USA state so the normal US regulations apply. It is also one of the most expensive USA states in terms of housing and food. Get a visa.

Aloha ! I lived in Maui, HI for 4 years. ¿ How was it ? just mesmerizing a spellbinding & enchanting island were the beautiful ocean just captivates your imagination & those beautiful mountains that just leave you breathless. If you decide to go to Hawaii, experience Maui-- especially Lahaina side, is where all the action is for the most part. Economically Hawaii is very expensive to live in, I used to pay $1,100.00 for a 2 bedroom partial ocean view condo, of course that was in 2002. Now any 1 bedroom condo in Lahaina will cost you $1,575.00. How people afford to live there? Most people carry two jobs, especially those who have a family and do not fall under the middle-class and above social classes. Single people are the least to worry about the high cost of living in Maui, if you could find employment in the hospitality industry, you have it made & find yourself some roommate(s) please---at least that is what most single people do in Maui. My brother visited Monaco, then Maui ..according to him Maui is more expensive.

Aloha!

Aloha to you, Obie.....I also worked off of Maui for about 6 weeks, twenty-some years ago. I was working with a team of people assessing the cost and complexity of cleaning up unexploded ordinance around an island, whose name I don't remember, about 20 miles south-southwest of Maui. The island was used as a military target range during WWII and perhaps even subsequently. We used to fly out of Kanapali by helo or go by boat from Lahaina. I always wished I could spend a few days on the island of Lanai and sleep at night on that beautiful beach on the north shore of that island. BTW...I did get to visit Charles Lindbergh's grave near Lana or Hana (I don't recall the name exactly) on the southwestern shore of Maui (near the nude beach) and did some scuba diving off the island of Lanai.....what views of tropical fish!
