A ghoul is a monster from ancient Arabian folklore that dwells in burial grounds and other uninhabited places. The English word comes from the Arabic name for the creature: الغول ghūl, which literally means "demon".[1] The ghul is a devilish type of jinn believed to be sired by Iblis.[2]

The female form is given as "ghouleh" in Muhawi and Kanaana (see ref below). The plural is "ghilan".

The ghoul is a desert-dwelling, shapeshifting demon that can assume the guise of an animal, especially a hyena. It lures unwary travellers into the desert wastes to slay and devour them. The creature also preys on young children, robs graves, and eats the dead.[3] Because of the latter habit, the word ghoul is sometimes used to refer to an ordinary human such as a grave robber, or to anyone who delights in the macabre.

This is what i got from wikipedia .... i would say it is the same for all countries. Creatures like that keep the same name most of the times.

Ok I think nobody know origin of Ghoul! Original Ghoul, the name is Arabic, mean monster! A kind of monster! it live in deserts! It eat dead body, open the grave! And it attack to alone caravan-man, passanger. It live in alone place. ıt is a phisical monster! Not a ghost, phantom, demon or djin! May be a werewolf but no transformed, evolved. Some tales say it's tall only a child (1.50 m.). Two kind of ghoul dead body eater and a vampire- human eater in Arabian Tales! When alone passanger is sleeping, it came and thirst his blood from under-foot. Passanger never wake up because no hurt under-foot! After the passanger when insensible, the ghoul eat him!
This is original Arabic Ghoul from 1000 years ago! Before Islam!
When Ghoul came to Iran (Arabians captured iran) iran culture embedded a vocabular too! Yaban(i)
Yaban's mean is alone in Iran and yaban's mean is wild in Turkish. Now in Turkish we use Gulyabani!
Ghoul-wild or I refer Ghoul-monster!
But in Turkish nobody don't this story. I didn't hear any gulyabani tale. But a great Turkis author written a novel (comedy- horrror), before 80 years. And 30 years ago, a filmmaker made a stupid but very funny comedy-horror film, the scenarist stol the original novel story and changed it. The gulyabani was a great horror mask on acrobatic stilt.
All Turkish people know that: An oldman mask! Ho ho ho!
I search that who know a realistic Anatolian gulyabani story?
And in another cultures too! But I know American film cultures! Stupid mini monsters (a finger tall). Or some kind of monster. Vampire called a ghoul at American films.
