Who you are or What you are?

My dad passed away a little over two weeks ago, at the age of 91.(Also a very devout Christian) Even though we all had attended church regularly, (Roman Catholic) I remember him always saying, it's not the religion you are in that is important, it's who you are as a person and how you live your life. This is what makes you smile everyday in the mirror.
Is Religion really that important in defining you as a believer? Some people can't live without consulting pastors or church leaders on every issue of their lives. Could you just live by your holy book alone?

My condoleances to you.
I think your father was right.
Religion is not the defining factor for someone to become "a good person".
Plenty of atheists managed to do just that.
I suppose we all have a sort of "built-in" morality, a sense of what's right and what's wrong.
People need to be reminded of it sometimes, but basically they know.

my deepest sympathy to you leaa.
i also think your father was correct! he put it in a very simple way that's easy to understand.
i dont believe your religion defines you or that you need to run to a church leader for everything. i think you could live by your holy book alone with the help of leaders of your faith. but not to live by what they tell you.
Smile

It so happens that my uncle passed away two days ago. He died right in my arms.
During his lifetime, he lived in a way that he felt was best for him. He did whatever he could by himself and tried his best not to be a botheration to others. He said that when he died he would die quickly and not trouble anyone. That's exactly how it came to pass.
My uncle practised his religion in a very quiet way. He did not tell others about it and he saw that his life is a reflection of who he is. He lived his life happily and spent a lot of time with his friends and family. On his last day, he treated me to dinner and took me out for a stroll.
How a person lives his life is the most important thing. It does not really matter what religion he belongs to.

My deepest sympathies to you Smile

I'm not religious, but I guess faith is what defines a believer, (just as lack of it defines a non-believer), even if it's a personal kind of faith.

Sorry to hear about your dad..
I think that the succes (happiness, love etc) that you get out of your dedication to your faith is a blessing from God. God just wants you to be the person you are. i think that going to mass is important, but the way you live your life to be a better Christan is important as well. Maybe you do actions of faith towards other people without noticing you are doing it but that counts just as much as if you were... God Bless
