what do you all think of Mf at this moment in time?
People slate how 101 have been running it the past year or so but how different would you run it?

how would you finance the technical know-how etc?
would any one be interested in making a collective offer involving interested members for the site, similar to FC Barcelonas ownership structure prehaps?

whats your opinions?

Invest? Invest in what IO1... or Drupal... cuz quite frankly that's seems to be where all of IO1's money is going these days. Seen their new website? (www.io1.biz/) You'd think they were only interested in promoting Drupal and heck you'd be right, they simply don't have the time, resources or the motivation necessary to give Mailfriends the attention it deserves. This place is a shoddy piece of junk overseen by an admin that couldn't care less and run by people with enough collective talent to fill a thimble, and it's suggested we invest in the company responsible? Only fools and manic depressives would consider such a move.

Now if it was investing in school fees to have IO1 get an education so they know how to run a place like this then maybe it could be worthwhile... but seriously you'd be better off shoving your money up a cats ass than investing in them thinking it will somehow better Mailfriends cuz it's not like your investment would go towards it's improvement.

John hamstrung this site when he purchased it, threw out all of it's history and then lumbered what was left with an incredibly poor site structure that had no hope of ever working properly. Put it out of it's misery and start again... not Mailfriends 3.0, but just Mailfriends. And the sooner IO1 go, the better.

I won't slate how they have been running it the past year or so as I know that running a big website with a large member base is not that easy.
How different would you run it? Simple and that is to make sure there is always someone around to help and take care of members problems at any givern time. Keep all members up to date no matter how little the the change or changes maybe. I think it is only fair that members be kept up to date on what or is not going on with the site they love so much. I am sure there is more I can add to thid but you get the general idea I am sure.

How would you finance the technical know-how etc? Well I know from the past (being around for ove 6 years) that there are a lot of peple here with great ideas and skills that could help make the site a much better place. Maybe they would do it just out of love the place who knows. One would have to talk to them and see what you could come up with. Just a few of my thoughts for now.

Yes you can! Nothing keeps you from making an offer if something interests you! I know quite a few houses that were sold/bought like that.

Investing in IO1? Laughing. Why? You'd lose all your money Laughing.
Mailfriends needs to get out of the hands of IO1. The sooner the better. Buying it together? I'm not saying no but then you'd have to find around 150 to 200 people who are willing to invest some euros/dollars, whatever. It is possible. Looking at all other MF groups around the net we have a base of around 100 to 150 'loyal' users. Would they be willing to invest for example 100 to 200 euros? I dunno. I would, but then again: i'm not everyone. And if we're all owners; what garantees we won't start fighting. Pretty sure we will after a while ... .

And Dennis has a point when he says there are quite a few skilled people around who could offer some technical know-how Smile

Oh and yes; John is a drupal service provider. He joined about everything concerning drupal on facebook. I think it's his latest dada. Now that last is a flemish expression. Dunno how to translate that Laughing.

most channels are dying, members havent been logged in for 6-7 months and etc. there should be done something to hold MFism up if admins want it too or else let it disappear day by day

How different, I'd rather see a 2.1 happen instead of a 3.0. What left to fix shouldnt take long at all, considering that the previous programmers have done a good work (which might explain why nothing has happened for the past year)

Following things should be done:

1. Fix what isnt working, bugs and flaws etc.
2. Get a new chat, if too much effort then make an official IRC chat and link it.
3. New design, damn important, currently the site looks like something that came out of a skunks asshole
4. Make new features/modules like a profilepimper, better photgallery, a blog (current "blog" is more like.... piss?), possibly some kind of event calendar for the country channels
5. Make everything for free, no freakin pay for shit option, which is pretty stupid considering that those functions offered are free and way better on other sites
6. Trade banners with other sites so people actually get to know this site exists, other kinds of advertisings if possible

Financiations is easy, sell some shares, 10-15% would be more than enough to make things happen big time. Considering what other communities are worth it would be a piece of cake really, selling off 10% in its current state for about a million euros should be possible and should be enough to kickstart the site off to some serious competition.
