Living in Russia

Privet Russia!
I am planning to move to Russia some time next year to teach English. I would like to know if there is anything I should do/not do, watch out for, etc...? I have never been to Russia before but I do have experience in living and teaching in a "far away" country. (I lived in southern India for 13 months)...
Anyway, many people are telling me not to move to Russia coz it's not safe, it's "3rd world," women have little or no rights, men are over dominating, racism, violence, etc... I haven't heard much positive things unfortunately Sad But that stuff comes from people who #1. are not Russian and #2. have never been to Russia. I have a baby girl whom I plan to bring over to me (in Russia) once I'm settled. Is this a good idea? Will she be ok in this country?
So I want the real info from Russians themselves please!!!
Spasiba! Poka Smile

I do hope you speak Russian then.
Russia is a big country, with better and worse places. it's not 3rd world, but there is a large 4th world.

ehh... Russia is not so bad.. my homecountry is next to it. besides different views of politics theres nothing else bad about them really... like the rest of the world id say! theres bad things everywhere not only in russia Very happy you can even get killed in Venice... not so romantical at all.
its not like its a country of serial killers and rapists. russians are just a bit more temperament but they`re really friendly.. and like everywhere in world, dont walk city streets alone in the dark. drunk people can be very loud Smile hehe... that scares most..
well.. dont touch their history in conversations...
women do have rights... its not islamic country, hehe... its just the politics that is overdominating Smile
i can actually say that Russia is a very beautiful country, you`ll probably get a good experience.. well, i hope so. yes, you`re gonna need russian...

Thanx for the replies so far...No I dont speak Russian but I can (kind of) read/understand the alphabet (cryllic) and know some words and phrases. I am trying to find a Russian teacher here, but I'm from such a small island, it's not going to be easy! Razz

There's lots of Russian courses in Russia, but they can be quite expensive if you look them up online.
The advise of my teachers: Don't learn Russian on your own, not even the alphabet., cause there's a big chance you learn them wrong, and pronounciation can be very important.
Russians are everywhere, I'm sure even in your little corner of the world.

Are you really going to move from a tropical heaven to cold Russia??? How could you ever came to this crazy idea??? Laughing Ok, it's your choice Smile About your questions, most of your fears are groundless. Probably, Russia isn't the most safe place in the world, though it is safe enough to live. The third-world-myth is pure political issue, it was invented by the Western politicians just to offend us. Anyway, it seems pretty stupid to me to call "a third world" country which owns aero-space and nuclear technologies, has good free health-care system, provides free higher education for the citizens, etc. Next, women DO HAVE equal rights. This lie concerning rightless Russian women took the first prize in my personal rating of the most silly lies about Russia Laughing About racism, there is not much racism here, probably 'cause we just have no negroes to hate... I'm kidding Smile Well, I heard of some illegal groups of "neo-nazi" in Russia, but also I heard of the same organizations in Germany, England, the USA, and many other countries which are considered to be safe of racism. I do not really think it is something you should be afraid of. And last but not least - violence. This rumor is true, Russian WINTER is violent! Laughing And besides the most violent climate you are not likely gonna find much violence here Smile
There is nothing really wrong about bringing your daughter here. Of course, she may experience some problems in school because of lack of language knowledge or bullying from other school-children, but I do not think such problems would be Russian specific.
And now a word about the real problem you are going to face. As Deng have already mentioned, it is the LANGUAGE. Having no knowledge of Russian language you will face a lot of problems even trying to fulfill your every-day tasks. There are not much people here speak any foreing language, so even buying things in groceries may appear a challenging quest to you! Wink Though I cannot agree with Deng, that Russian is impossible to learn without a teacher. Sentences in Russian are very redundant (comparing to English), so even if you are mispronouncing some sounds or the whole words, your listener still is able to recover in his own mind the correct sentence you meant to say (at least most times it is so). Many folks from old USSR and Russian Empire (esp from Central Asia) speak just terrible perverted Russian, but we CAN understand them, so I see absolutely no reason why we wouldn't have been able to understand broken Russian with strong Bermudian accent. Smile
Do you have more questions? Smile

I can say that Russia is the 3 country and so bad , because I know and I hear , as example , in Italy ,Germany, some people can't buy a cup of coffee, a newspaper or book one time per a day .

maleSoFiStAСоФиСт | 5 May 2008 - 9:16pm
