Vegetarianism?

I have a friend who is a vegitarian since she is 15 or 16; others were short term due to BSE, others again for a period of time when the news were full with these horrible animal transports across Europe.
As an omnivore, I do eat meat and enjoy it. However, I do not need the overabundancy we have in the “first world” countries at all. I could easily cut down on eating meat even further and rather have good quality, regional products than dumping price meat, that was raised with medicaments and under terrible circumstances.
Another thought for the meat eaters: What if you had to kill the animal yourself to eat its meat? I would, I know, but I am sure I would end up eating less. Pretty f*cked up.

(yeah, thanks, I posted this here to spare you the work, dear moderators, I would have posted under General or Philosophy)

I enjoy eating meat but if I had to kill it myself I'd immediately become vegetarian. I just couldn't kill something - unless it was trying to kill me first! Wink

I can understand why some people wouldn't want to kill or clean up an animal--it is dirty work, after all. At the same time, not wanting to do that doesn't mean people shouldn't be eating animals. It's just like any activity: some people like to do it, some don't. So what's the problem?

I don't think I could live without meat! pff I love meat!! I just don't think about how or by who it was killed. And humanity has always eaten meat. It's nature, animals eat eachother as well! I don't have any problems with it. I respect vegetarians, but I just don't understand why. But I don't want to understand either Razz Oh and I don't think I'd kill an animal myself to eat. Unless I'm dying Rolling eyes

I'm a vegetarian too for 3 years.
In general I'm not against eating meat. Animals eat animals so why don't people should do it also?

I decided for myself that no animal need to die for me because I can also leave without meat! I loved meat and I sometimes think about eating it because it tastes good.

But I can't understand why people do such terrible things to animals in our society...

You can see it in this thread. People don't think about anything... they do things like they ever do. It's too hard for them and it makes life more uncomfortable... I guess that's the problem. But people won't change...

femalerhcp_fan | 14 May 2008 - 9:39pm

I used to be demi-vegetarian. I still ate fish & seafood and ocassionally deer that my dad brought home. But it was very rare that I ate meat. I still don't like to eat red meat that much. We're not even supposed to eat as much meat as the "first world" countries do. It's supposed to 50% veggies and/or fruit, 25% starch, and 25% protein.

Although I do like to enjoy a medium-rare steak sometimes.

Something for those who won't kill to eat meat: Those neatly pre-packed meat you see in shops were once animals ALIVE. Someone had to kill them for you to eat. Such as milk in bottles/cartons coming from something named “cows”...

Killing an animal for our carnivores needs, is justified when done in the most humane possible way and causing as little suffering as possible. I don’t agree with the method Moslems use to slaughter animals. Or the Spanish in bull fights.

Trophee hunting is even worse and the culling of animals aren't justified at all. The intention is for fun, not the need to provide food on the table. I live in a country where tourism industries make money out of foreign visitors wanting to "kill" one of the Big Five for simple pleasure and the thrill hunting. Even if the meat gets processed afterwards, the principle of it all is vulgar and not justified at all.

Meat is on my menu 50% of the time, yes I've killed and ate Bunnies, Pigeons, Rook even the odd Tommy, mostly the eating is to avoid waste, I hate to see an animal killed for sport....

Agree on that bullfights sucks, but thats it.

Throphee hunting, culling of animals, seriously what do you think would happen if this wasnt done? If we didnt shoot off the mooses here there wouldnt be enough food for them and many would starve anyway, we didnt shoot off enough wildboars here and now were having serious problems with wayyyy too many of them, causing massive damage in the traffic and eating through peoples properties like bulldozers, a few of these can easily plow up a lawn in notime. Hunting is good for several reasons, its not just about putting food on the table.

You are right, slakker. As sad as it is that mankind pests this planet to the extent that it became necessary to keep animal populations artificially in check and that trophy hunting is one way for national parks to raise their funds to pay for sustaining the park and the animals within.
However, I think bogmyrtle was talking about the motivation to kill an animal, not about the necessity. And I agree there, how f*cked up is somebody who shoots an elephant, lion etc for no other reason but “pleasure”?

Thanks to Johsky, someone got my point. Nothing against the culling of animals in National Parks as its mostly done efficiently, helps with funding and in some cases are related to the war against poachers (keeping herds smaller etc.)

Won't go into things such as a recent controversial debate of why a bunch of elephants in a Nat. Park were killed without proper authorization or consulting other game reserves first... and what had happened to their "remains".

Slakker, in my language your name means "snail" which obviously means a lot of gardeners won't have any reservations about getting rid of your species, regardless of the manner in which it is done... And then of course there are those who enjoys a snail delicacy, flavored with garlic and butter. He-he...

I've been a vegetarian for about three months now (I'm 15). Why? Because I've NEVER EVER heard a good reason for eating meat. It's evil. I love animals, and I don't want to eat something that I love.

Reasons to become a vegetarian:
- It's much more healthy
- You'll live longer than a non-vegetarian
- You can eat as much as you want without becoming fat
- It's environmentally friendly
- You can save many animals from getting killed
- You also save lots of money
- You feel better
- We humans are not born to eat meat
- People will probably think you're a cool, radical person. And that's positive!
- I love vegetarian guys (haha!)

Still insecure? Watch "Earthlings"!!!

femaleDepritasse | 22 July 2008 - 6:02am

I like meat at times, but not everyday an 300g Steak. Not because I'm nauseate about but because I don't like eating meat that much.

maleEdIsBack | 23 July 2008 - 1:10am

I've shot wood pigeon in the past to cull them...but they were too mangy to eat.
I know a Frenchman who eats road kill...he's sent his kids to school with "badger" sandwiches. Waste not want not Wink

femalekushani | 6 August 2008 - 4:49am

Well i'm a vegetarian too..
I realy dont mind other people eating meat... I quit eating meat because i wanted to and i dont care even if other people around me eat meat...... Smile....
