Can we trust our teachers anymore??

  female
PrettyPeaceful | 10 May 2008 - 11:44am

It might be old news but, there is nothing worse for me to see than a teacher being male or female in whom we have put our trust to teach our kids only to find them sleeping with them. As in the case of the young lady who was married and was sleeping with her students. It's not just a one off situation, it seems to be occurring more and more. Not with the men suprisingly but with the women teachers. One sick puppy!!!

Very happy

maleemrahblk | 10 May 2008 - 11:56am

do you think all the teacher are same, it is an unusual occasion and you shouldn't generalize it, i am a teacher in Turkey and I have never seen this kind of event, that's about the person, not the job, i like my job very much and i dont want to hear this kind of comments on my job, i am trying to educate, i am trying to teach life to children, i am saying again the subject of this kind of disgusting events is the person who dare it, not all of the teachers...

I don't think all teachers are like that really. There r so many valuable teachers who teach life without any expecting.

femalePrettyPeaceful | 10 May 2008 - 12:12pm

I am a teacher as well, that is why I made this comment, I didn't say ALLHammering but it is becoming more of an issue. Maybe background checks should be done on the new teachers coming in because this seems to be happening with the younger teachers. Also I was commenting because I have been watching a couple of cases in the United States with interest. One husband actually shot and killed the student his wife was having an affair with! Please don't take my comments so personally it more of an observation than an accusation.Trouble

If a relationship between teacher and student - no younger than senior high school students, though - is based on mutual consent, I see little wrong in it. I'd be more concerned with the teacher's ability to teach, which is a rather rare skill.

Obviously you don't have any children, teachers are there to do a job, not to put another notch on their belt. Hypothetically speaking, if your mother or father was a teacher and they were having an affair with their student, how would you feel!!

Non-hypothetically speaking, my mother is a high school English teacher. If she had an affair with a student I'd feel rather surprised by her lack of taste. The average guy in her school is an idiot.

I will not dignify that with an answer, and will not rise to the bait. I like a good discussion and can't be bothered hurling insults back and forth, it is rather juvenile and futile.

Spare me such answers as "I rest my case" then. Your age does not allow you to be patronising.

Well, there must be a reason why you are as patronising as you are. I thought it might depend on the fact that you think too highly of who knows what astonishing level of wisdom your age might grant you. Be far from me implying that you might be senile...

However, let's not go off topic now.

My people have a saying!! take unto thyself a teacher..One who would be a teacher commands the next generation,he must be 20 times better than we in every respect..

femalechana_batata | 10 May 2008 - 9:06pm

Let's be unusual in here and stop stewing for a fight.

On one hand, I can understand why a teacher would feel embarrassed at such bad behavior of another teacher. But the really shouldn't. As common as it seems, these cases really are rare and each teacher knows the truth of his or her behavior.

Having said that, as a parent I can also understand the concern for one's children. People don't walk around with a brand on their head saying they are unsafe, so how are we to kow who is OK and who is not? Sure the government vets these people, but some have slipped through that safety net and that is a reasonable cause for concern--e.g., that it will happen again. And just because they are rare, doesn't mean there should not be concern. Again, who's to say that person in the .00004% isn't the teacher in your kid's classroom?

One of the best ways to combat this issue is to be an involved parent and, if you are a teacher, seek out the parents to work with them as a team. That's what parents and teachers are there for, after all: the child. It is observed that children who see their parents being involved get into less trouble and are more capable of speaking up for themselves, perhaps because they see that what they have to say is weighed with real concern and criticism.

The "unusual" was referring to how nice it would be to have a switch from the USUAL posturing and petty, juvenile behavior in here.

All juvenile fantasies aside..I don't think anyone will dispute that it is overstepping boundaries..even if the student is 17 or 18 and above the "predator" stage.
Last I looked, it's not in the job description.
And like the boss to subordinate..
it's, at best, an uneven distribution of power.

But after all the media attention the last several years...
any teacher that would succumb to the urge at this late date in the game has got to be a real idiot,
among other things.
Bad judgment is a real career killer.

I still think it's mostly a lot of lurid fun for the media. ..and for those that like reading about lurid fun

I agree completely. Somepeople are against prohibitions with relatioships between professor and uni students on the premise that a uni student is above age...but even in that situation the balance of power is an issue, as redwillie said. People seem to miss that point alot. So "consent" (even if a 15 year--what the latest high schooler is--old was mature enough to give it) is not entirely the issue.

Well, besides the fact that sleeping with a student as a teacher, as well as the other way round (you never know) is simply a dim-witted thing to do, I think the law provides a good frame for this.
As shaka said, age of consent is age of consent. If it happens, there are clear rules how it is handled. If there is consent, both of them are responsible and in my opinion the teacher is not to blame.
Regarding though, that the age difference might be preposterously great and the factual life span of this kind of relationship is in most cases ludicrously low if at all existant, it just remains a stupid thing to do.
You know, like knocking yourself out by getting rat-arsed in a fraternity, without contraception.
It might be fun at first, but it's just not worth the problems.
So the only thing that those people are to blame for, is utter fatuity.

But to be completely honest, if somebody in my class slept with a teacher, I kind of wouldn't care. As a parent I'd probably be disappointed, because with my kind of upbringing there really should be no problem in getting something better than an old hag from school and there really should be a little more brains than that.

The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil. We see before us a huge community of producers the members of which are unceasingly striving to deprive each other of the fruits of their collective labour. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

I had a science teacher (female) when I was in high school who was rumoured to have slept with a student (male)...she was fired and had her teaching license taken away. But she deserved it since at that time the student was only 14.
As an EFL teacher I can teach people of all ages but the thought of doing anything besides teaching them English is totally out of the question. If you want a relationship, the classroom is NOT the place to look for it (unless the students are old enough, say 18 or older, even though here the legal consenting age is 16)...
Peace Very happy

You have no idea what some teachers know about their students or pupils. going from odd deseases over beating or child prostitution. I think most teachers are very much to be trusted.

On the whole we have to use our instincts and common sense to know who we can trust or not. Any person put in authority can very easily misuse the trust of their followers..group leaders, teachers, employers, family members etc. Unfortunately we will always have this problem. My main concern is the little ones that are in the position of helplessness.
