Censorship

I am sure different countries have different rules. Here in Canada some the T.V. programming leaves something to be desired. I am so glad my son is grown now and can make his own choices. It is the younger and more influenced children I think about. There is so much garbage on television right now. I wonder what some of these programmers or thinking about. Every channel you turn to either has terrible language, or full blown nudity or programs like "Queer as Folk", I really find it appalling, and this is the reason I went sattelite to have more choices. I do, just not the ones I was hoping for. Anybody feel the same way as I do???

Umh...nope. The only show I'd very happily see censored is the damn Teletubbies.

TV here in the US isn't much better. In fact it might be worse. We have the same things that you were describing. I agree fully with the other sentiments about reality tv. It should be kicked to the gutter.

femalePrettyPeaceful | 10 May 2008 - 1:38pm

And it surprises me that they keep adding new shows! Hellooooo!

No, when I surf through the guide on Satellite, I see them all as they limit my choices of real good programming.

I think the reason why we have those kinda programs these days is just to get attention. Nothing is good enough!!! So they're trying to make the most extreme programs just to be unique in things.

I feel the same way you do. I just don't really care about it. Maybe it's because I'm of a new generation or maybe it's just that I can be hardly influenced. I don't know. Thing is, where does it end?

Laughing I tend to watch more of the oldies channels (70s - 90s) programs and then mostly comedies, 95% of to-days programming seems to have a heavy leaning towards a moronic viewer who will just sit and watch anything up to and including so called reality shows “a week in the life of a tapeworm” would probably get a top rating.

I think the "reality" boom was kicked off with the "survivor" type show..and ,yes, I agree, they are about the worst thing tv has to offer.
But I think one reason that they continue to this day is less about the popularity than about how cheap they are to be produced.
Once that discovery was made...they started thinking they could just fill us up on it.
But there's no reality to this crap.
Now people just need to stop watching.
I am hoping their hey day is waning...
but even for that kind of dull witted fare..
I'd never advocate censorship.

I don't have TV so I don't know most of the shows, although I know some of it is shite and some is good. But what I see as a bigger problem, or at least as big, is that people watch too much TV to start with, AND they don't talk to their kids about it. Some people know the personal goings on of so-and-so but they don't know their kid's favorite class at school.

Sorry, but I think there is something huge wrong with that.

But TV isn't going away, and in my opinion it doesn't really need to. I like some TV shows I've seen and there are some cool things for kids on. I do think someof the shows overstep their bounds, and one way to counter that (instead of resorting to censorship and alongsid of lettingsponsors know how you feel) is just to talk to the kids about it. Even not letting themsee it is not as effective in my opinion, because they will see it someday and not be prepared. In my personal experience a little communication goes a long way.

@PrettyPeaceful:
I'd recommend you watch "American Dad".

But it's true. TV is full of crap these days, no matter where. But I wouldn't censor it. I just deny to watch it. As far as concerning kids I'd probably let them grow up without TV anyways. I want my kids to be aware what is happening in the world and TV won't contribute to that.

The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil. We see before us a huge community of producers the members of which are unceasingly striving to deprive each other of the fruits of their collective labour. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

There is a lot of wonderful programming out there today for children and adults that is not readily available in the real world. I am constantly learning from the Discovery Channel, Documentry Channel, History Channel, National Geographic channel. When I was teaching English, many of my first level students would watch Sesame Street to learn English. When I was trying to learn French, I was kind of hoping for the French version.Crying

Belgium has no preventive censorship, and that's a good thing.
If the people want to see rubbish, then change the people. Broadcasters just show what the people buy. How to change the people? Get them educated.

I would also say that there are both qualities in tv. All the channels PrettyPeaceful mentioned are a good surce of knowledge for me. And I love "Comedy Cental" a comedy channel. Makes me laugh til my tummy hurts

femaleLeaa | 12 May 2008 - 6:36pm

Some of the surreal shows are quite funny. They have to be taken in the context they are given though. Much of these are exaggerated to make the series interesting. We all love controversy unfortunately and this is what sells.
Some of these shows make us laugh at ourselves, because there are actually people out there that act like this.
It is too bad though, that some young children are exposed to how negative some people can be.
I myself love, funny videos, caught on tape.. Very happy

Self censorship is the best form I would advocate, you control the remote, and on/off buttons, if you feel a program is inappropriate for yourself or children change channels or pass-code the channels.

I would neither censor, nor deny. Denial is a great source of temptation, temptation leads usually to a stray path. Censorship is hateful when and wherever. I think it's smarter just let it go. But having an eye over it, explaining some things when necessary, and always being there as a reference, a model against the Rocky Horror Daily Show. That's what I would do.

Yeah. They need to answer for their crimes in some way or another.

Anyway, tv is mostly utter, utter crap. There are only a handful of programmes i like. The few decent programmes are drowned in a sea of complete garbage. I feel like putting my shoe through the screen every time i see another property programme, or some idiot trying to be a model, or some moron sat around going "Hey, look at me. I'm getting airtime for absolutely no reason". TV is crap, but i'm not a big fan of censorship either.
