Are we given a national stereotype?
The French call us shopkeepers or roast beef but I'm wondering what you Germans think of us after our... history.

That is done with most countries I guess, for exemple the Dutch are often called cheap.

Really? The Dutch are seen as ultra Liberal in terms of your drug policies

I like the English people. My wife is an English teacher and she often went to England with me. Although I was not very glad at the beginning I learned to like them.
According ty my experience with them they are careful drivers (we often had the caravan with us and then you realize best if the drivers are careful!), their women - mostly the elder ones - are of an overflowing lovelynes and very friendly and most of the men have a dry humor.
The younger ones seem sometimes to be less educated, loud and kind of drunkards. But that could be said of other young men as well. I don't think that it is specific English.
The national steroetyope is quite different: cool and fomal, with good manners. And of course "No sex please, we're British" (which is not reality, you can see very much teenage pregnancies).

Hi,

well I have no special opinion or stereotypes of Britons inside my head. It´s somehow sad you feel the need to ask such a question.

Technically i was asking the German population of this site what they thought..but hey... and sad to ask such a question? Its an interesting discussion...It would be amusing if Britons were still thought of wearing bowler hats and sipping tea Wink

I was asked to go out drinking with a friend..when i replied "i'm not into heavy drinking"
I was promptly told "well you should start then!"

My mistake..I did not realise you were a German exiled into Austria Wink

“The WAR?..DONT mention the war!”.. Laughing
If you have never seen Monty Python “Fawlty towers - The Germans” , you should, it is hilarious!

Aside from that, I have two dear friends from England, living in Germany now and some colleagues in the UK who I have met. Therefore, I might not be good for stereotypes but I still can come up with one: Genuine English cooking ……oh dear, bly me Rolling eyes
At least with regard to food it was good England had so many colonies once!
However, even I like Cornish pasties Smile a lot!
British humor, in as much as I can tell is not a stereotype, its real Very happy

Our cooking isn't as bad as some might be led to believe Wink

A few years back I read on the wall of a French Travel shop "contray to popular belief the British have good cuisine". Cheeky sods.
They must be still be feeling sore over Waterloo Wink

I think it is great to ask people from another country their thoughts on different countries. How do you learn? Not everybody can afford to travel to every country. People have strange thoughts about people in different countries. When I was younger I thought people in Holland(all of them) wore wooden shoes all the time. We still have people who think that people in Canada all live in igloos, and sad as it might sound, there have been the odd few come up from the United States bringing their snow skiis with them in July!! So, I see no harm in asking about another country's lifestlye.
