Think again...this family are not the only ones, evenif their particular situation seems extreme. There indeedare poor people in Saudi Arabia, and not all women have drivers.

Unable to Pay Rent, Makkah Family Live in Tent

A Saudi veteran of the first Gulf War, unable to pay rent, is living destitute with his wife and nine children in a tent in a derelict part of the Aziziya district of Makkah.

Abdullah said his family relies on street lamps for light at night and that he uses the trunk of his car to store clothes. The family rents a house for a day every two weeks to get some respite and wash their clothes. They then return to the tent.

Some of Abdullah’s passengers recognize him and wonder why he lives in the street. When they hear his story, they offer help. However, he refuses to accept charity.

At the end of his conversation with Arab News, Abdullah urged officials to help him. He said he had tried several times to send a telex message to the authorities. However, for this he needs a landline phone, which he has no access to.

This is exactly what happens when a country have too much money, and don't use it to build a society. The middle class in SA has been growing pretty fast in the past 20 years, but have failed to educate them selves. Why? Because there have been no reason to work. Cheep labor have been imported for decades in SA. The huge royal family have also wasted most of the money that they have earned from the oil industry, ie. buying military gear from US, in large numbers. But also, cars, casinos and other useless luxury stuff. It is a dying kingdom.

Don't all Muslim people have to donate a certain percentage of their earnings to help people like these? Honestly the billiions they earn in Saudi Arabia through oil alone and they cannot even build places to live for every single one of their citizens. I know it's one of the most backwards thinking countries in the world but that is ridiculous. Sad

It could, but it can't. This is a country without a civilization. It is in the beginning so full of money, but it has no organization. Too much is going too few. And to be real, the arabs have never been any good in creating a modern state....

I don' think this is surprising. I guess there's poverty in all countries (to varying degrees), even in rich countries.
