Honestly, it comes as a surprise to me. And such a shame. She's a top player!

On one hand it came as a surprise to me as well, but on the other you could have seen it coming. She hasn't been playing many tournaments this year and she said a couple of times that she had been thinking about life after tennis. Those were indicators that she was thinking about quitting already.

Belgium loses a great champion, but she did what many sporters dream of to do: she quit at the top of her career. She's leaving the sport, while being number 1 in the world.
