Poor Austria,

It is so sad some times to even bother with the news these days! Just when a young women is freed from her captivity, a man murders his wife and daughter and three others not even in the same town, not with a gun,(not that is great, but a least less suffering)but with an axe. You would think with all the news out there I would cease to be shocked, but I was shocked what the heck is going on!

I know this goes on in other parts of the world, but here in Canada you don't hear too many terrible crimes like this ocurring in Austria! My stepmother is Austrian, is also quite shocked.

Aaah, the power of the media. Something terrible happens in, say, some remote part of the US and most of the world population won't even hear about it. Something just as terrible happens, just when a previous appalling episode has been brought to the attention of the media, in a small country in central Europe with little more than 8 million inhabitants and the world starts wondering what the heck is going on. Go figure.

Why don't you go and destroy some other topics, you only have derogatory things to say anyways. Go Visit the joke channel, and get a laugh and put a smile on your face, if that is at all possible! Very happy

Austria seems to have had a string of bad luck. As for the US, shocking violence is just a normal day.

femalePrettyPeaceful | 15 May 2008 - 12:26am

But I have a difficult time accepting it, you know?

austria really is a victim of media...
...but... i just can't forget all those dead babies that keep being found in various austrian gardens, basements, freezers, etc. over the last years.. Sad

and this is happening only few hundred kilometers away from me... sad..

maleVBC555 | 15 May 2008 - 12:50am

Senseless violence always is difficult to accept.

Thousands of years of existence for humanity full of horrible crimes and you still have trouble to accpet it ?

What's going on right now in Austria and your idyllic/peaceful Canada is nothing compared to the Horrors committed in Africa, the Middle East...You should carry your attention and look even further. Wink

I am well aware of the atrocities all over the world, it doesn't matter how long it has gone on for, it is still difficult to accept, and trust me there on things going on in Canada I can't accept either. That is me, that is who I am, I will never apologize for that!

I guess that the more shocking something is, the more it attracts the media's attention.

In Germany babies will be killed, short after birth. In Italy wealthy people will be captured.
In Utah 14years old girls will be forced to marry awful guys.
In China you'll get into prison by asking for human rights.
Well, a bloody normal day on the planet.
Really nothing special austrian.

There are also many other shocking events around the world, where most of us even don't know, so we
don't put our interests in it and along with that we do have a certain distance to it. So it remains in every themselves what one thinks and what one is interested in. For the moment I think far more of poor Burma and China.

As this is the World News Channel, what took place in Austria is news to me. Whether the news is old, or not it shouldn't make a difference. If it wasn't for the media that covers these things, we wouldn't have news. I was only making the statement that I found this particular news item sad, of course there are many, all over the world but there are some things that affect me more than others, not to say I am not interested in the others.

Really? First incident was a single incident, so was the second, and the third. Hitler became German and Mozart became Austrian. No interest in looking into a deeper problem.

Whatever.

maleslakker | 15 May 2008 - 1:33pm

Incest, murder, yoddling, dunno whats worst but they cant help it really, its the thin air in the alps making them go insane. A few years ago it was the belgians who were acting weird, probably a bad brew of Stella Artois..

I find it way more shocking that people are rather sympathising with the tragic fate of ONE horrible case, devouring every gruesome detail of it, than sympathising with starving children in Africa, Iraqis dying in the streets and the people killed in Tibet. I mean, more people, same cruelty, familys, children, relatives, individual stories all the same. Yet there is more interest for the doing a madman in Austria about which you cannot do anything, than how you can actually influence the fates of other people.
There's cruelty all around the world. Not just in Austria. Also in Germany, France, American and certainly also Canada. Just the media coverage is different. It is so much more comfortable to look at "the Austrians" who must be living in such a horrible country where things like this are happening every week.

Mass media - emotionalizing the already happened and hardening the hearts towards the alterable.
Dragging the view to "the others" instead of showing you your own doorstep.

Everything and anything that is posted about world news and politics has a right to be posted, if the poster involved thinks other people could be interested with their follow-up thoughts. Only the moderators have the ability to decide if this posting is not appropiate or not pertaining to news events.
The poster of this topic also related that this does hit close to home as her stepmother is Austrian.
She did not in any way try to diminish other world tragedies, but brought us to the attention of some current news in a specific country.
Even though you don't agree with comments this gal has made in other channels, give her a break.
Everyone has a right to post.

I didn't realise when commenting upon the misfortune of an individual I had to add a disclaimer saying I have equal sympathy for the rest of the dying in the world.

femaleTiska | 15 May 2008 - 6:51pm

If anyone realised it yet, my comment wasn't criticising anyone in here. I just blamed the mass media for invoking sympathy for one thing, but not the other.

Me thinks you're trying to find an insult in everything I say. Therefore me thinks you should calm down and realise I am a 18-year old girl that has firm opinions - not the devil.

And my opinion on this topic is, that the mass media loves to portrait horrible people and their horrible acts while they do not love to seek the causes for the actually important things and horrible things happening, that people could prevent.

Even more reason to understand that others have firm opinions as well and grow up. As you told me before, I shouldn't be using my age.
I maybe opinionated Tiska and I am not always right, I am not perfect, I cannot walk on water, but when I do I will let you know.

As stated earlier this is a channel for world news last I checked Austria was in the news, get it yet? If I had posted a topic about the flooding here in Canada, you would have had something negetive to say about that as well. " Oh, you only look at your own country" nah, nah, . When I post something on World News it is newsworthy to me, I don't give a Flying Fig if it is newsworthy to you.

In my opinion it’s you, PrettyPeaceful, who takes everything personally. I agree with what shaka said here and I can’t see how he destroyed your topic with this very true statement.
I also don’t know why Tiska was attacked here. She gave her opinion and it’s certainly right that because media always need new “sensational” news, such a case gets more attention than other unequally worse catastrophes which influence many more people and could be influenced and particularly prevented if people cared like they do for such a hyped family tragedy which happens all the time in all parts of the world but then mostly unmentioned by the world press. At the moment it seems that the media are especially interested in Austria, I can’t see at all how Austria, a whole country, can be called poor in this context.
