Do Vets overcharge?

I just had my little dog in for a exam 2 months ago. She had all her shots, except for a kennel shot. They said it wasn't needed unless we were planning on having her placed with other dogs for a time.
I tried to schedule a grooming appt. and this vet hospital, but they said she would need this shot, actually it goes up her nose in drop form. I bring her in and then they check her heart beat, give her the dose and charge me again for another full exam. $80 and the dose costed $10. (it took 2 minutes) Is this the norm?

I think I am in the wrong profession!

Vets are a complete rip off! I think they seem to pick a number and times by six and this is the amount they charge. They do sound like they were taking advantage though.

Leaa, I worked at an animal clinic when I first moved back to Ontario, and yes they are very expensive, most of the time I think it is to cover the cost of their overhead for their fancy clinics. It is true however that you do need the one shot if you are going to have your dog in with others, due to the fact that you have animals coming in from the S.P.C. A. many of which haven't had any shots at all, and you get animals coming in from Animal Control with the same problem. The reason you need the shot for grooming is for the same reason your dog is exposed to them and they to your dog. Preventive measures. As for the consulting charge that is a real money racket. 15 min is equal to a consult, and 30 min is eual to an exam. Next time just ask for a consultation it will be cheaper for you. Also their pet food is a real money racket as well. They put them on perscribed food, and then you can't buy it anywhere else unless they call your vet. I quit that job, I didn't like how some the animals were treated.Little cat

My vet is very reasonable, the service he provides is excellent and if you need to call back to do something small from a previous visit you are only charged for a 'short consult'. He is also very caring and pleasant to deal with.

In my last year of business, my vet bill was £4,200 It sounds a lot but equates to £14ph, one of our dogs is epileptic, and her costs are £60 a month.

Given the amount of time a vet is in training almost double that of a doctor, most are quite cheap when everything is considered.

ive worked in a vet practice for quite a while now and it is expensive!

just to step into the room with a vet for a consultation is £18.00 and thats without even them touching the animal.

but i guess our pets are worth it Razz
