More About Me

Well, I don’t know much about myself; but I’ll give it a try. Let’s start with the things that make me happy. Language is the major aspect of my life, and I hope to have a career in Linguistics one day. I am a third year language and culture student from Cape Town. I speak English and Afrikaans. I’m an intermediate at French, after studying it for 2 years at university, but I would love to continue learning it and speaking it. I’m learning Chinese at university at the moment; this will be my second year and it’s one amazing language- very difficult. I can understand Dutch (since it’s mutually intelligible with Afrikaans) although this is sometimes limited to written Dutch- only sometimes I understand spoken Dutch. I’d love to learn it, I’m sure it won’t be hard because it’s very similar to Afrikaans to some extent. I also studied Russian for two years, on my own, and I am still interested in learning the language. I might have forgotten a lot but I’m sure I’ll get all of it back if I start learning again. One ancient language (not sure if it’s correct to call it an ancient language) that I would love to learn is Inuit. It’s very difficult, but the culture and language especially is really interesting
Well, my interests vary from music (especially live music), languages, movies, "Long Street" in Cape Town (where I get to see live music), books, writing, my dogs (Jenna, Milo and Jack), wolves, the small things, religion (although I'm not religious myself). I love pens, I don't know why, but they are amazing writing tools. I love words too, especially handwritten ones. Handwriting is spectacular - especially since everyone's is different and unique. The music I listen to is Björk, Tracy Chapman, Depeche Mode, Tori Amos, KT Tunstall, Ani Difranco, Kaizer Chiefs, Tegan & Sara, Alanis Morissette, Jack Johnson, Thrice, Liang Jing Ru, Cai Yi Lin, The White Stripes, CSS, Portis Head, Air, Peaches, The Animals, Placebo, Lady Sovereign... South African music: Lark, The Parlotons, Love Jones, Cassette, Karen Zoid, The Narrow, Fuzigish, Hogs... I don't get to read much, but since it's holiday now I read much more. So far I've read 'Ireland - A Novel' by Frank Delaney, 'Vodka' by Boris Starling and 'The Last Samurai' (not the movie) by Helen DeWitt (I read these in about a month - one week a novel, however I didn't read everyday). I loved reading the Harry Potter series (I haven't read all yet). I've read "Lord of the Rings", which took me three years- one book a year- this time I blame high school. I've also read "The Hobbit" by JRR Tolkien. My favourite authors are JRR Tolkien, Arthur Golden, Chuck Palahniuk and Terry Pratchett. 1979 was a great biography as well. Here are the books from these authors that I've read: Arthur Golden - 'Memoirs of a Geisha' Chuck Palahniuk - 'Choke' Robert Rankin - Sex, Drugs and Sausage Rolls Like I said, anybody is welcome to sign my guestbook so please do :) |
