More About Me

Fans of Irish pub songs will probably recognize this chorus which pretty much sums up my life philosophy. It describes a no-frills, no-pampering kind of living that I see as ideal. No need for a lot of tvs, shoes, cars, or other objects; give me the basics and a train ticket anywhere and I’ll be satisfied. Frankly, I just like experiencing life and I’m not too big on getting attached to inanimate objects. I don’t want to waste my time with people who enjoy gossip and drama. I enjoy being around people who challenge my perspective and who see that there’s more to life than their little bubble of a world.

I like all kinds of music and have songs from just about every country. My tastes vary widely depending on my mood so I can listen to Beethoven and Dvorak one day and Chevelle and A Perfect Circle the next. I love my collection of international music even though cds can be hard to find here in the U.S., but I do listen to groups like Paris Combo, Shubha Mudgal, Haydee Milanes, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Gaelic Storm, Café Tacuba, Sara Taveres, Sandi Thom, Lily Allen, Chingon, Xiang Xiang, Patrick Bruel, Dengue Fever, and Angelique Kidjo just to name a few. I like pretty much all genres from Pop to Hard Rock, but I haven’t found any rap or hip –hop groups I like too much. French rap is the funniest thing ever; that language is not meant to be menacing!

Favorite shows have to be The Daily Show with John Stewart and The Colbert Report, probably the only decent news shows on air even though it’s all a joke. At least their willing to point out the obvious!

When I’m not studying or working I practice Tae Kwon Do, read (things like history, historical fiction, philosophy, politics, religion), take care of my plants (we can’t have pets here so they’re the next best thing), hang out with my friends (we usually end up watching movies and tearing them apart, no movie is sacred enough to be protected from our barbed wit!), and if I make the mistake of playing a video game I won’t put it down until I’ve finished it (still can’t get past the last level in LOTR!!!!).

I’m a rambler, I’m a gambler
I’m a long ways from home
and if you don’t like me
well leave me alone
I’ll eat when I’m hungry
and I’ll drink when I’m dry
and if the moonshine don’t kill me
I’ll live ‘til I die

I’m most interested in other people and countries. Everything foreign strikes my curiosity from music and dress to religion and language. Languages are my passion! My ideal career would include a lot of traveling and helping people. I’m really into activism and being a world citizen instead of simply ‘an American.’ We’re all in this together and when there’s suffering I want to be in a position to stop it.

What I love to do:

listen to music (especially foreign bands), movies (nothing too sappy and romantic), reading, meditation, yoga
